Crisis Communications: Is your organization prepared?

Are you ready to respond in a crisis or catastrophe? What’s the most significant threat to your organization?

Since 1982’s Tylenol poisonings, crisis communication planning has gotten lots of verbal homage from the public relations profession. But most companies still don’t have crisis communications in place.

Listen, learn and ask questions of two of West Michigan’s veteran public relations practitioners, Rick Chambers of Pfizer and Ruth Steele Walker of Foremost. They’ll talk about how they handle crises in two very different indutries and how to tailor communications.

Seven members complete APR readiness review

Warren Berckmann, Nicole Tallman, Alan Blanchard, Sarah Oomen, Susan Krieger, Ron Koehler and Carol Tanis have completed the Readiness Review and are now eligible to sit for the Accredited in Public Relations (APR) exam.

Thanks go out to Molly Klimas, APR, who guided the seven PRSA members through the APR review process. Molly, senior counsel at Seyferth Spaulding Tennyson, Inc., generously volunteered countless hours to help our members review and study for the APR exam.

Although that may sound simple, it is not. Molly had to coordinate everyone's schedules and after the 'students' finished meeting with her several times over the winter months she then had to coordinate Readiness Review panelists to further assist the APR candidates' reviews. After each candidate has completed their Readiness Review they are eligible to sit for the written exam.

"We're extremely pleased to have so many PRSA members from the West Michigan Chapter pursuing their professional designation. It speaks well of the caliber and commitment of public relations professionals who work in West Michigan," says Ruth Walker, WMPRSA President.

Readiness Review assistants also deserving kudos and thanks include: Roberta King, APR, Beth Dornan, APR, Bruce Schedlbauer, APR, Dave Roznowski, APR, Cindy Droog, APR, Terri Howe, APR, Robin Luymes, APR, Anna Bryce, APR, Kate Washburn, APR, Ron Greenfield, APR, and Joe Yantis, APR.

Established in 1964, the Accreditation in Public Relations is a voluntary certification program for public relations professionals, administered by the Universal Accreditation Board through the Public Relations Society of America. The purpose of the certification is to unify and advance the profession by identifying those who have  demonstrated broad knowledge, experience and professional judgment in the field. The program seeks to improve public relations practice. The designation Accredited in Public Relations (APR) signifies a high professional level of experience and competence.

PRSA members Accredited after January 1, 1993 must accumulate a required number of points in continuing education, professionalism or service categories as part of the Maintenance of Accreditation Program to maintain their certification. This further strengthens the value of the APR credential and keeps professionals actively involved in the currents of the public relations profession.

State Conference needs volunteers

The 2006 PRSA Michigan State Conference will be held Thursday and Friday, May 4-5, 2006 at the Marriott at Centerpoint in Pontiac, the same location as in 2004, which received rave reviews from attendees.

We are in the beginning stages of planning for this very successful event and the planning committee needs your help. The Michigan State Conference is a joint event planned by all four Michigan PRSA Chapters and representation from all four chapters on the planning committee is important. They are still in need of representatives from West Michigan and White Pine.  This conference is a huge undertaking, but incredibly rewarding for those who participate in its planning and execution. We have great people signed up so far, but the more we have working on all the different pieces, the easier it is for everyone involved. This would be a great opportunity for students to get involved as well.

For more information or to volunteer contact:  Tyler Andrew, tandrew@xrite.com, WMPRSA President -Elect.
