2005 E-Newsletter

| President's
Message
Tim Penning, APR
WMPRSA 2005 President
You've all heard and probably
uttered the mantra that "PR is a management function."
One of the reasons we make that claim is because we
are supposed to be trained not only in reaching various
publics with our messages, but listening to them as
well. We seek and respond to their input. We work to
develop mutually beneficial relationships.
So it only makes sense that your volunteer board of
the West Michigan Chapter of PRSA would seek member
input. We want to make sure your membership is beneficial.
We're just about half way through 2005 and already looking
to 2005 and making plans. Now is the time to give us
input on a number of things:
PROGRAMS--We've worked hard to line up good programs
for this year and sent you the annual calendar earlier
this year so you can plan ahead. We'd like to do that
again for '05, but we especially want to have programs
that will be a good draw for members and for non-PR
colleagues to gain something and learn about our field.
Please give us your ideas for programs you'd like us
to plan for next year.
DIVERSITY--By
the time you read this, our May 12 diversity program
will be over. We also had a "meet the minority media"
program in January that was well attended. But we hope
to do more to not only reach diverse audiences, but
recruit minority professionals to the PR profession.
We have our diversity plan on the Web site, but here
too we would appreciate ideas and involvement from members
at large.
ADVOCACY--We've
been enacting our advocacy plan as well to ensure that
PR is properly portrayed in the news media and in other
venues. But there are still a lot of people who "don't
get it" when it comes to PR. Your insight and
help to advocate for the profession would also be appreciated.
LEADERSHIP--This
fall we'll have another election for new board officers.
Please consider nominating yourself or someone you know
and respect to take on a leadership role for our chapter.
That's the best form of input you can have.
I
hope to hear from you soon on these or other topics.
Enhancing the Profession,
Tim Penning, APR
2005 WMPRSA President

OPPORTUNITY TO GET FRESH INSIGHT
Here's a win-win. Your business or
nonprofit organization could offer a great learning
opportunity to some PR students and in return get some
fresh ideas and insight into a public relations problem
or opportunity. GVSU's Advertising/Public Relations
program takes on about 25 "clients" per semester in
a variety of classes. For more information contact Professor

Internship Opportunity
Communications Internship in Philanthropy for Students
of Color
Williams Group is a strategic communications firm based
in Grand Rapids. Founded in 1978, the company's 25 communications
professionals serve a range of corporate and nonprofit
clients throughout North America. Since 1998, Williams
Group has invested in a growing practice serving a range
of philanthropy clients-including private and community
foundations as well as national nonprofit organizations
and programs. The nonprofit field (including philanthropy)
is maturing with regard to the understanding and application
of strategic communications as a vehicle for success.
However, There are no college/university-based educational
programs specifically designed for communications professionals
entering the nonprofit field. The increasing number
of college/university-based programs that prepare students
for careers in the nonprofit field do not emphasize
the communications discipline as a core curriculum element.
The many established college/university-based communications
curricula do not emphasize the nonprofit field as a
potential career path. There is a relatively low percentage
of people of color working in the communications discipline
within the nonprofit field.
Williams Group seeks to improve this situation and support
increased diversity within our firm through an internship
for students of color conducted in conjunction with
West Michigan colleges and universities, and in cooperation
with our philanthropy clients.
For more information visit www.wgsite.com
or call Williams Group at 616-281-0880.
