Elevating Organizational Impact Through Meaningful Internal Storytelling

Hear from Chad Mitchell, Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs and Head of Content and Digital Platforms at TD Bank, as he shares strategies to elevate organizational and cultural impact through internal storytelling that reinforces your mission and strengthens employee connection.

About Chad Mitchell:

I believe the best communicators don’t just tell stories — they help shape what’s worth telling.

For over 20 years, I’ve led corporate communications inside some of the world’s most complex organizations: the Fortune #1 retailer, a global financial institution, and high-stakes public and private sector partners. Along the way, I’ve launched storytelling platforms that repositioned legacy brands in culture, advised leadership teams through M&A and crisis moments, and built high-performing teams that operate as business partners — not order-takers.

At Walmart, I created a storytelling hub and a podcast that put the company into the cultural conversation in ways few expected. Now, at TD Bank, I’m reimagining my communications function from the ground up — building centers of excellence that connect strategy, narrative, media, and data to drive measurable business outcomes from engagement and reach to reputational lift and stakeholder trust.

I started my career with pen and paper. Then computers and remember blast faxes? Then social. The tools keep changing. The fundamentals don’t. What still matters is mastering the basics — and challenging the creative status quo without chasing shiny objects.

I spend most of my time helping leaders translate complexity into clarity for our colleagues, clients, regulators and the public.

What frustrates me: confusing tactics with strategy. A flashy campaign means nothing if it isn’t tied to business results.

What drives me: the belief that great storytelling is both an art and a discipline. That data should inform narrative, not replace it. And that communicators who sit at the table where decisions are made — not waiting for a brief — are the ones who shape what happens next. Right now, I’m focused on harnessing AI for speed and scale, proving that communications can be as rigorous as any other business function, and building teams that produce work we’re proud to put into the world.
